As you’ve read inΒ my Refried Beans post, we eat a lot of Mexican food. With that type of meal, you need tortillas. Problem is, where I live tortillas are expensive. Where I live tortillas can run for 3-4 dollars for a dozen.Β Umm, can you say overpriced?
The recipe for healthier soft tortillas located at the end of this post costs roughly 1 dollar for the ingredientsΒ and 30 minutes of your time. I kid you not. It’s that awesome. Another important factor is taste, and its puts the packaged tortillas to shame!
Let’s get started:
In a bowl dump in your flour…
salt…
baking powder…
and give it a good whisk.
Next:
Eat some chocolate, this is very important!
I needed the caffeine to roll all by myself .Β π
Oh and by the way, that’s what a leek flower looks like in the back.Β It smells STRONG!
Any ways back on topic now:
Mix in some melted coconut oil, the secret to soft tortillas (and HEALTHY tortillas)!
Use a spoon until the spoon is no longer doing a good job. Wow, you know you’re diggin’ my action photography skills!
Then switch to the cutter thing. What’s it called anyway??? Keep you spoon put though, cause you will need it in a minute!
Now you are going to need some hot water (not boiling, just hot tap water will do). I didn’t realize how oddly I was holding the measuring cup until I was editing the picture so just bare with me here guys!
And mix it up ’til ya have ball of slightly sticky, and really soft dough. Knead it until its no longer sticky (this takes about a minute).
Cut the dough into 12 portions (just try to make them some what even).
Roll into balls (this help to roll out a more circular tortilla).
Roll out a couple of them at a time.
Fry them up! This hardly takes any time at al per tortilla, so don’t walk away. Also no need to grease your pan. These tortillas will not stick and you will only be smoking your house up by greasing your pan.
As soon as the come off the pan keep the wrapped in a kitchen towel or they will dry out and get cold. And ain’t nobody want that!!!
So there ya have it folks. Healthier Soft Tortillas. They taste fabulous and its not hard. They are great for breakfast burritos, tacos, regular burritos, or anything else you crazy people use tortillas for!
Enjoy guys!
I love y’all!!!
Here’s the recipe:
Ingredients:
- 3 cups flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 3/4 cup hot (not boiling) water
Instructions:
- Whisk together the dry ingredients. Cut in the coconut oil. Mix in the water. Knead 1 minute or until dough is no longer sticky.
- Divide dough into 12 balls. Roll the dough balls out into 8" rounds.
- On a frying pan pre-heated to medium heat, cook one minute on the first side and 30 seconds on the second time.
- Adjust the cook time and temperature as needed. Do not burn the tortillas. Store in a kitchen towel until all tortillas are cooked. Serve warm or in a air tight container for up to 4 days on the counter. Do not refrigerate as the will turn rock hard.
Popping in to Say G’day! I live in South Africa and also find tortillas too expensive over here, but our family loves them, so I will need to try this recipe. Thanks for sharing! My weekend blog hop is at http://abooksandmore.blogspot.com/2014/08/welcome-to-my-weekend-linky.html
Hi Maria! I’m so glad to find a tortilla recipe that doesn’t call for whole or white wheat! I’ve tried those and my family doesn’t like them. I gave up until running across your recipe. I will give this a try this week, since the littles have eaten almost a bag of store-bought tortillas in two days! Thanks for sharing! Blessings from Bama!
We go through so many tortillas I’ve tried to make them homemade many times. They always turn out too hard, never soft. I’ve always been careful to place them in a towel or bag immediately after coming out of the skillet so they’ll steam but they’re still always too hard to bend or roll without breaking. I’m a big fan of coconut oil so I’m definitely going to try this recipe – thanks for sharing! (visiting from Homemade Monday Hop)

When I used to make them and they turned out hard it was because I was cooking them too long. Remember, you don’t actually need to brown them. Just cook them until they aren’t dough anymore, which doesn’t take long.
Hope this helps!
Awesome tip, I’ll give it a try again. Thanks for the advice!

I just pinned this for later. Thanks!
Sometimes when I cook I have to eat a bit of chocolate to keep my energy up π
Yum! Homemade tortillas! Love this idea. I found you through Share Your Stuff Tuesdays & now I know what to serve with my queso fundido next time! Thanks for sharing this! If you get a chance, I’d love it if you stopped by my blog sometime π Have a lovely day.
I have actually been to your blog many times before. I love it!
I love the way you cook! except my chocolate is Hershey! π
Thank you for the recipe. I make soft ones to, except mine has an egg in the mix. I prefer yours!
Have a beautiful day!
Thanks, Jennifer!
I love that you call the pastry blender the thingy…those are the technical cook terms. I use them often and my husband always makes fun of me. I have some coconut oil and I always have trouble with the recipes that I have tried for flour tortillas so I am going to try these. They sounds amazing. I don’t have a cast iron pan… I know shame on me but I never have. If mine don’t turn out at pretty, I know that I need to get one!!!
Before I found mine at at a thrift store I just used a regular frying pan.It just didn’t like how long I had it on the heat for a big batch of tortillas. Good luck!
Thanks!! I did get a tortilla press so I am hoping that it helps a little π NExt step cast iron pan π
Maria, YOU are a tortilla Diva!!! I love the tutorial and your term for the pastry cutter and your humor about the chocolate. I shared it all over the universe and thanks for the great recipe. Carrie, A Mother’s Shadow
These look great! Thank you for sharing this post at City of Creative Dream’s City of Links last Friday! I appreciate you taking the time to party with me. Hope to see you again this week π

The last time I made tortillas I almost burned the house down (but that’s because I greased the pan lol) and I could not for the life of me get them to roll out very much. They kept shrinking back on me! No idea what that was about but this recipe looks so easy I may have to give it another try π

Your tortillas are beautiful! I love good flour tortillas. My husband is allergic to wheat though, so we usually make corn tortillas. They’re delicious too, so I can’t complain too much. π
They taste better than they look! π

Oh, melted coconut oil! I haven’t tried that but I love fresh homemade tortillas. Pinning and thank you!
The cutter thing is called a pastry blender.
Thanks Kathleen! π
Your tortillas look wonderful. I have never made homemade, but I am going to try them.
Thanks for the great directions.
Bev
Hmmm…I didn’t even know you could make homemade tortillas! I definitely giving these a try
LOL on the chocolate. You got me. I was reading under each picture, then when it came to the bag of chocolate, I was going to bail on the recipe…that is, until I got below the picture. Funny.
Like Colleen said, “You got me.” I thought it doesn’t look like there is chocolate in these tortillas. LOL! Can’t wait to try this, I love tortillas and any excuse to eat chocolate. Pinning and visiting from Freedom Fridays with All My Bloggy Friends.
I can’t wait to try your recipe…it sounds great!! I was wondering, can you freeze them?
Yes, tortillas freeze great! Just make sure that you put them in a sealable freezer bag and remove as much air as possible before putting them in the freezer. I’ve frozen them before when it was just myself and had no problems.
Such a cute post! I love your chocolate picture and comment. I was like chocolate???? until I read it. Can’t wait to try your recipe. Mine has butter solid shortening so yours is going to be a winner I know!

Ok, i love tortillas and i love coconut oil… But, are the tortillas going to have a coconuty flavor? I’ve only ever used it to bake sweets
Hi Rhonda! Some of the people in my house say they taste a little bit like coconut, but they just taste buttery to me. It is just more flavorful, but in a savory way. It’s not at all sweet. Hope this helps! Thanks for the question! π
I can’t keep my youngest son (15) in tortillas, even getting them at BOGO. I think I’m going to be making a bunch of these and stick them in the freezer for him. I might even manage to get one or two of them for myself. Thanks for the recipe!
Your tortillas look amazing – like the one’s my grandma used to make! What brand and type of flour do you use? I have a bad gluten allergy so will need to find something that is equivalent to the type you used.
Thank you in advance!
My mother taught me to make tortillas when I was a girl. Mine never came out round and I used to get discouraged. She always told me that she liked mine because they came out looking like Texas, California and the other 48 states. I’d always get the first warm tortilla with butter.
When I grew up and started making them on my own they never tasted the same so she let me in on her secret… the oil she used was left over bacon grease. Yep, not healthy but so tasty.
Hi there,
Great recipe! I tried making them…I don’t know how you got your to stay round, and when I went to fry them, maybe I had them too thick? They took longer than a couple minutes to get them to cook on each side and how do you keep them soft and floppy (like the store-bought ones)?
Other than those issues I had, they taste super good.

These sound yummy! Do you think that you could use coconut or Almond flour as a replacement for the flour?
Thanks
I haven’t tried it but I don’t imagine it working well. Maybe try an all-purpose blend mainly made with those ingredients. Or you could try this recipe in place of the flour and let me know how it goes! π
Thanks!
Maria
Seriously the best I’ve ever had! Thank you so much for a fantastic recipe!π
