Easy Homemade Broth {In A Slow Cooker}

We all know how convenient it is to have a good Broth on hand.Whether it’s for soup, rice, casserole, or for drinking, stock gives and amazing flavor to what ever dish you are preparing while saving time. Unfortunately store-bought broth most of the time contains unnecessary, and unhealthy additives. And when making your own is simple, and takes 10 minutes of your time, why not???

Making your own stock is as simple as throwing some vegetable into a slow cooker with spices and water. Let it cook on low for 1-2 days and you have a fabulous broth that has much more nutrients and flavor than a carton you bought at the store.

I usually cool mine completely before putting it up in old mayonnaise jars. Because mayonnaise jars and hot liquid do not mix….ask me how I know.

You cant really go wrong with this easy homemade broth. You just use whatever you have on hand. I often use it as an opportunity to use the less attractive veggies that’s are about to check out.You can use bones, or chunks of a less expensive cut of meat if you wanna be a fancy pants.

As for the spices some, pepper corns, bay, onion, and garlic will do the trick. The best part is, you don’t really have to cut anything up (except for maybe the quarter of the onion). You just have to chunk the carrots, or celery, into halves or thirds and toss ’em in the pot, and the payoff is delicious.

There is however a terrible downside to this recipe…..your whole house (unfortunately) will smell absolutely fabulous! It’s a painful wait, but it’s worth it!

 

Easy Homemade Stock {In A Slow Cooker}

Ingredients:

  • Chicken or Beef bones
  • Carrots
  • onions
  • celery
  • garlic
  • 10 Black peppercorns
  • Sea Salt to taste (up to a tbs per 10 cups water)
  • Basil, Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme, Parsley, Sage, or other herbs and seasonings of your choice
  • Splash of Vinegar
  • Cold Water

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  • Brown the bones in a shallow roasting pan (this step adds a nice flavor)
  • coarsely chop your veggies
  • Dump veggies and bones in slow cooker
  • Season with choice of herbs and spices
  • Cover with cold water
  • Add the vinegar and set your slow cooker to low and simmer 24-48 hours.
  • I use a sieve to fish out as much as I can before ladling it into jars or Tupperware for the freezer.
  • Use your stock right away, store it in the fridge a few days, freeze or can it.
